New Cameo Glass Covered JarBy Mark Chervenka
New Cameo Glass Covered Jar
This new 10″ covered urn, or jar, marked Galle has been offered by reproduction wholesalers. This example has a pale amber overlay on a frosted clear glass body. It is signed with an imitation Galle mark in raised glass. Although some vintage Galle from ca. 1880-1930 was made in a similar shape, originals in this shape are scarce and not likely to show up in online auctions or the local flea market.
This new jar has the usual poor quality which characterizes most new cameo glass made in China. Raised designs are thin and lack detail; almost none of the fakes have a ground pontil. Almost all vintage cameo has ground pontils.
