Fantasy Limoges Mark on Plates Made in ChinaBy

Fantasy Limoges Mark on Plates Made in China

A fantasy Limoges backstamp has appeared on porcelain reproductions made in China.

The new backstamp, is in gold. It has no old counterpart; it is a fantasy. The new mark appears on these 12″ plates purchased directly from a large reproduction importer for $25 for the pair. Both had the original Made in China paper label which is easily removable. The plates are good quality porcelain decorated with cobalt borders and full color scenes in the centers.

Collectors should keep in mind that Limoges refers to a geographic area in France, not a specific company. Geographic place names– such as Limoges, Prussia, Bohemia, etc.– are legally acceptable to U.S. Customs in new marks as long as the country of origin is clearly stated. The Made In China paper label satisfies U. S. Customs legal requirement.
