Fake badge with Tiffany markingBy Mark Chervenka
Fake badge with Tiffany marking
In the late 1960s, a large number of brass belt buckles began appearing carrying the Tiffany name in a variety of marks which were all proved to be false. Those particular buckles were part of one of the most elaborate and concerted efforts at passing newly made items for old in the 20th century. An entire book with false information was printed to "document" the buckle reproductions.
Almost 30 years later, another piece of new brass with a Tiffany mark surfaced. It was the "U.S. Indian Police" badge shown below and marked "Tiffany Studios, New York." It was offered for sale by a midwestern reproduction wholesaler for $5.
