Durand Art glass shade update

Unlike shades with 2¼″ fitter rims by other art glass manufacturers–such as Tiffany, Steuben and Quezal -- Durand shades virtually never have a rolled over fitter lip (see diagram of typical shade below). The vast majority of Durand shades were custom made for just a few New Jersey lamp manufacturers. Durand shades fit those lamps and usually no others.

Shown here is a 6″ Durand shade in multi-color Lava or Crackle, a rough textured finish. This shade and other confirmed original Durand shades are practically never signed. Any shade signed Durand should be viewed with suspicion and examined thoroughly.

Fig. 1 Genuine Durand shade with no fitter lip. About 6″ tall. Most Durand shades were held in place by petal or leaf-shaped pieces of metal surrounding a lamp socket.

Fig. 2 Rare original Durand shade in original cast iron base with figural griffiths, gold doré finish. About 18″ overall. No marks. Shade held in place by metal petals.
