New Delft imports

"Delft" has been a standard inventory item for reproduction wholesalers and importers for years. Many pieces have remained unchanged in their catalogs since the mid 20th century. Many new pieces carry confusing marks that seem to suggest age and quality.

One type of Delft offering filtering into the antique market has the new mark shown in Fig. 2. It is marked "Delfts Blauw, Handpainted, Made in Holland" along with a variety of other symbols, figures and letters. As a general rule, any mark with the letter "s" at the end, is new. Also, any mark that includes "Handpainted" is also new.

Fig. 1 We couldn't figure out what on this new plate was handpainted. It was all transfer except for a thin line of trim around the rim of the plate.
