Black Americana - Kitchen Towels and Tablecloths Copied

New towels and tablecloths based on black memorabilia originally sold ca. 1940-1950s is in the marketplace. Images on the new pieces have been copied from vintage originals and silk screened on 100 percent cotton. This is the same technique and material used in most originals.

New towels were priced at $5 each; tablecloths from $30 to $40. Originals in similar sizes average $15 to $30 for towels; $75 to $150 for tablecloths. Prices for originals are primarily determined by the subject matter.

Taken straight out of the package, the new pieces are relatively easy to recognize as reproductions because of their fresh crisp condition. Although made of cotton like the originals, the new pieces are stiff-surfaced with sharp creases in the folds. Colors are bright and hard-edged with no sign of normal wear. The ink and new cotton have that distinctive new fabric scent. Even mint condition relatively unused originals are generally soft with none of the new fabric scent. Old colors are usually slightly dulled.
